Using Football to change lives

Just like in Britain and Ireland, children in Africa love football. They love playing, watching and learning about football. But unlike children here, football is rare luxury in life where everyday is just a struggle to survive. Today alone, 19,000 children will never play football again. They will die from easily curable diseases that they couldn’t afford the medication for. Our parent charity, Abaana, has for 10 years now provided children in Africa with the education, healthcare, and chance in life they had only ever dreamed of.

Last year a group of Abaana volunteers formed Football4africa. Football4Africa uses the beautiful game to raise awareness and funds for the Children of Africa. While Abaana meets their practical needs we wanted to give the kids something fun, and the chance to enjoy life like kids in the west do. All the money raised and shirts collected go straight to those in the poorest parts of the world. Maybe your passion for football could help put a smile on a childs face.

After the success of our Football Shirt Amnesty (see below) we have decided to take a football team to Uganda this summer. A squad of 16 will be playing matches against local teams in Kampala, coaching in Abaana schools and distributing the shirts you have donated.

Since October 2007 we have been collecting your old football shirts to send them directly to the children and adults who would wear them with pride. The response has been staggering. So far we've received over 1600 shirts plus tons of other football related clothing from all over the UK, America, Finland, Turkey....

This first batch of gear began it's 6 week journey to Uganda container in March. The amnesty will run indefinately. We plan on sending a shipping container at least once a year.

1. Put your shirt in a plastic bag.
2. Sellotape a £1 coin to the bag if you'd like to help us with postage costs.
3. Contact us to get it collected or send it to us here.
